To help jobseekers overcome employment barriers, and to meet Queensland's need for a skilled workforce, the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation administers programs to improve and increase opportunities for employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative
Government-funded employment programs designed to help you gain the skills you need to join today’s workforce.

Productivity Places Program (PPP)
This joint Australian, State and Territory Government initiative provides additional training places for existing workers and jobseekers.

Indigenous employment
Find out about community-based employment and training programs designed to help Indigenous Queenslanders compete in the jobs market.

Jobseeker projects
Locate current employment or training projects running in your area to help you increase your job skills and opportunities for employment.

Queensland Skills Plan
The Queensland Skills Plan defines 24 actions for addressing current skills shortages.

  • To help them gain the skills and experience they need to compete in the labour market, the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative offers disadvantaged jobseekers a range of assistance tools that can be customised to meet individual needs.
  • The Experience Pays Awareness Strategy aims to help employers 'age-proof' the workplace by meeting employment and training needs of mature-age workers.

Trade Training Taskforce
The Trade Training Taskforce brings together key industry and government stakeholders to develop and implement urgent measures that ensure apprentices and trainees in training, and those who have lost employment or are at risk of losing employment, are supported to complete their training.

School to Jobs Alliance
is a Queensland Government initiative which aims to help transition school leavers in Central Queensland into training, further education or employment.

Previous initiatives

The Queensland Government introduced the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative in 1998, at a time of near record unemployment. Funding for the initiative ended on 30 June 2007, when it was replaced by the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
