Employment initiatives
Queensland needs a skilled labour force to meet the needs of industry and the growing demands of the economy. The Queensland Government is therefore committed to offering jobseekers the training, vocational skills and help they need to find and keep jobs.
The Queensland Skills Plan defines 24 actions for addressing current skills shortages.
- To help them gain the skills and experience they need to compete in the labour market, the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative offers disadvantaged jobseekers a range of assistance tools that can be customised to meet individual needs.
- The aim of the new Experience Pays Awareness Strategy is to help employers ‘age proof’ the workplace by meeting the employment and training needs of mature-aged workers.
- To ensure skilling opportunities are targeted to older workers, the Queensland Government will develop customised training strategies to meet their specific needs.
Trade Training Taskforce
The Trade Training Taskforce brings together key industry and government stakeholders to develop and implement urgent measures that ensure apprentices and trainees in training, and those who have lost employment or are at risk of losing employment, are supported to complete their training.
Previous initiative
The Queensland Government introduced the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative in 1998, at a time of near record unemployment. Funding for the initiative will end on 30 June 2007, when it will be replaced by the new initiative Skilling Queenslanders for Work.
