Customised training for older workers

Queensland's older workers are an important labour market resource, as they have extensive skills and knowledge gained through many years on-the-job. Despite this, they are less likely than younger staff to hold a high level qualification, and have generally not undertaken any formal learning for a long time.

To deal with the growing problem of a predicted shortfall of skilled workers, the Queensland Government has developed training strategies customised to meet the needs of these older workers.

The strategies include assessing their skills and experience up-front at TAFE institutes to ensure they have access to training that takes these into account and links them to any necessary training in 'add on' literacy, numeracy and information technology.
